Workshops on Effective Teaching
Teaching and Learning offers workshops on effective teaching to help faculty develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes which help ensure successful teaching.

We welcome suggestions on promising trends in post-secondary education or other pedagogy topics you feel would enhance your teaching. Please e-mail teachingandlearning@conestogac.on.ca, and we will keep you apprised of any new workshop developments.
Part-time faculty are paid $40/hour for completing a workshop. To be paid this rate, you must:
- Log in to a workshop’s Zoom link with your Conestoga credentials. You will be authenticated when you enter the Zoom room and asked to change your name to the preferred name you use at the college;
- Be a part-time faculty (part-time, partial load or sessional) with an active or pending teaching contract at the time you attend a workshop;
- Attend all workshop hours or half hours; and
- Complete any workshop activities. Workshops will only be paid for complete attendance and participation.
Note: Payment will be made for attending a unique workshop once, even if you decide to attend again to learn more. Once a month, contracts will be created to provide compensation for the completion of workshops from the prior month. Upon your approval of the contract, the funds will appear on your pay stub within a month.
Support staff and administrators teaching part-time at Conestoga and taking the mandatory courses or any EDV workshops outside their typical work hours are eligible for the $40/hour.
Please follow the instructions below to register for workshops on the Student Portal. If you experience difficulty with registration, please e-mail teachingandlearning@conestogac.on.ca with your requested workshop title and section number, and we’ll register you, on your behalf.
- Log in to the Student Portal using your employee number, and provided password.
- Select the Browse Continuing Education Courses tab.
- In the search box, type in the EDV code of the workshop you wish to attend, based on the list below.
- Select Search for Courses below the search box.
- On the Course Details page, choose the option that best suits your schedule.
- Select Add to Cart.
- Select Checkout and Enroll.
- Finally, Confirm your address.
- Select Save.
Accents and Discourse: Building Skills in Intercultural Listening – (EDV0161)

Our ears and brains and hearts need to learn to listen to new ways of pronouncing English. They can do it! With a focus on how accents work, the impact of attitudes on accent comprehension, and the ways that different cultures engage in small talk and group work, this session will leave you with new knowledge and new skills for effective communication in the global classroom.

Collaboration in the Cloud for Group Assessments – (EDV0170)

With Office365, you can support and track group-based assessments! This hands-on workshop will provide you with the skills and experience you need to have students creating and sharing documents, collaborating on projects, and actively co-constructing learning as they demonstrate it to you. We will experiment with how to use the OneDrive to plan group projects using shared documents and calendars. We will test out adding comments to provide feedback and tracking individual student contributions to group products. Finally, we will determine where students may encounter issues, and create strategies to help manage group work in the digital environment.

This session will get you started creating graphics using Adobe Express, a versatile, cloud-based design tool. Through demonstration and practice, you will gain the skills to create simple graphics using Adobe Express, and consider scenarios where it would be advantageous to make your own visuals for teaching and learning contexts. You will also explore how Firefly, Adobe’s generative AI tool built into Express, can help create novel images through the use of effective prompts. Don’t Talk About It – Tell It! Using Anecdotes to Promote Learning – (EDV0173)

When we relate content within the context of a real, or realistic situation, content can resonate more with students. In this workshop participants are asked to think about a concept they have to teach and a situation where it might be found in the work environment. Participants will examine some examples of anecdotes, identify key attributes and, using a framework, develop a “situation” into a relatable anecdote. Time will be given to work on, share, and critique their anecdotes; leave with a better understanding – and a “story” to tell.

In this workshop, we will focus on the challenges of teaching students who are ‘neuro-diverse’, meaning that they engage and learn differently than ‘neuro-typical’ students. Expect to learn about the different characteristics of neurodiversity, the strengths and challenges neurodiverse students bring to your class, and how to engage neurodiverse students to maximize their full potential.
