An Introduction to Teaching International Students at Conestoga

Teaching and Learning facilitates a 4-part learning series to build skill and confidence in teaching International students.

Workshop Descriptions

Supporting International Students through Intercultural Teaching Strategies(EDV0174)

In this workshop, participants will receive an overview of intercultural teaching strategies and frameworks to support teaching international students. We will discuss the application of these strategies to a) getting to know international student learning needs, b) building a sense of belonging in a diverse classroom community, and c) ensuring materials are presented with an intercultural communication lens. We will examine and consider several teaching and learning scenarios through an intercultural and inclusive lens.

Supporting International Students with Effective Classroom Management Techniques (ED0175)

In this workshop, we will use an intercultural lens to examine common classroom management challenges and consider practical tips for overcoming them. We will discuss strategies for circumventing potential attendance issues from day one; identify the 3 golden rules for successful classroom management (and how to uphold them!) while maintaining a positive and inclusive learning environment; and review the role that thoughtfully- designed active learning activities can play in keeping students engaged and on task.

Supporting International Students with Inclusive Assessment Practices(EDV0176)

One of the biggest challenges for international students is understanding the expectations of the various types of non-test assignments and also how testing occurs in outcomes-based learning. Faculty may struggle to mark work submitted in English that does not meet their expectations and may also struggle with their own biases. This workshop helps faculty with scaffolding for student success and marking effectively.

Supporting International Students with the Use of Technology(EDV0177)

This workshop takes a practical look at the digital experiences of international learners and compares this to the digital environments of their courses. We will discuss possible strategies to accommodate learners, including the intersections of technology with culturally accessible and inclusive teaching practices. We will identify several apps, practices, and strategies that can support meaningful participation in learning exercises and aid your course delivery.

Teaching for Student Diversity

Teaching and Learning introduces a 5-part Recognition of Learning series highlighting knowledge, skills, and attitudes to understand and support the diverse group of students you will find in your classes at Conestoga.

Workshop Descriptions

From High School to Your College Classroom: What You Should Know About Today’s Domestic Students (EDV0336)

In this workshop, we will explore the current state of high school graduates as you learn about high school structure, “what’s new”, assessment and evaluation practices, de-streaming, post secondary pathways and the first-year college/university experience.  Reflection on your own high school experiences and minds-on activity will also be part of this presentation.

Teaching Across Generations (EDV0334)

Generational diversity is commonplace in work settings, but how common is it in the college classroom? In this workshop, we will look at the growing evidence for generational diversity in post-secondary education. We will take a closer look at the learnings needs of teenage students, direct-entry students, and mature students. We will explore how generational differences impact an educator’s style of teaching, a student’s preferences for learning, and the interactions between students and educators in a college setting.

Understanding the 1.5 Generation:

Strategies for Supporting Diverse Students in Post-secondary Education (EDV0333)

Many 1.5-generation domestic students began their education in Canada during middle or high school, navigating a unique blend of cultural and educational transitions. In the post-secondary phase, these students encounter distinct challenges and opportunities that set them apart from first-generation immigrants and Canadian-born peers. This workshop offers an in-depth exploration of the transitional experiences of 1.5-generation students. Participants will learn about best practices to support these students’ journeys in college classrooms, ensuring their optimal success.

Navigating Academic Transitions for a Diverse Classroom Using Positive Classroom Management (EDV0331)

This workshop will explore strategies for creating strong, inclusive classroom communities through positive classroom management. We will focus on bridging the gap between high school and college classroom management techniques, and how to foster meaningful connections across cultures and build trust in a diverse classroom.  Participants will explore techniques to connect with a diverse group of students and implement effective classroom management practices, to support learners in their transition from high school to college.

Socio-culturally Responsive Assessment in a Diverse Learning Environment (EDV0332)

As our student body becomes increasingly diverse, it is vital to implement equitable assessments that give all students equal opportunity to demonstrate their learning, regardless of their background. In this workshop, we will discuss how students’ cultural backgrounds and prior experiences with assessment and learning influence their conceptions of assessment and assessment experiences. We will also explore strategies for designing culturally responsive assessments tailored to individual needs, ensuring that each student receives the support necessary to thrive academically.
